Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Service Overview:
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to generate highly detailed images of soft tissues, joints, organs, and the brain. MRI is widely used for diagnosing neurological conditions, spinal disorders, joint injuries, and internal organ abnormalities. Unlike CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation, making it a preferred imaging method for many conditions.

Victorian Imaging Specialists provides state-of-the-art MRI services with a focus on patient comfort and high-resolution imaging. Our scanners are designed to accommodate various patient needs, with wide-bore options available for those who experience claustrophobia.

Preparation Guidelines:
Some MRI scans require fasting or contrast injections for enhanced imaging. Patients should remove all metal objects, including jewellery and hearing aids, before the scan. Those with implants such as pacemakers should inform staff beforehand. Detailed preparation instructions will be given prior to the appointment.

What to Expect During the Procedure:
During the scan, patients will lie on a table that moves into the MRI machine. The procedure is painless but requires remaining still to ensure clear images. The machine produces loud noises, and ear protection is provided. Some scans may require contrast injection for improved clarity. The average MRI scan takes between twenty to sixty minutes, depending on the area being examined.

Results and Next Steps:
A specialist radiologist will analyse the MRI images and send a detailed report to the referring doctor. Patients should follow up with their doctor for a discussion of the results and next steps.
